Now that your child has made the transition from primary to secondary school it is our responsibility, with your support, to encourage reading for pleasure in all our pupils. As part of the Read to Succeed initiative each secondary school in North Lanarkshire was supplied with a large collection of new books aimed specifically at the S1 age group, providing something to suit every reading age and ability.
We are now delighted to be able to offer every S1 pupil, in all of our North Lanarkshire schools, the chance to attend an author event. Each author will speak to the whole S1 year group in your child’s school about the types of books they write and the inspiration behind their writing. They will also encourage the pupils to continue to read and to write creatively. There is a tour schedule on the reverse of this letter for you to check which author will be visiting your child’s school.
At these author events there may also be an opportunity to purchase books by the author at a small discount. Most books will be priced between £5 and £8. There will also be an opportunity for pupils to meet the authors and get an autograph.
We hope you will continue to support us to help your child Read to Succeed and maximise their full potential.
Advice on how to encourage children to read for pleasure is available from The Scottish Book Trust website: http://www.scottishbooktrust.com/reading/parents.
If you want any further advice on helping your child choose books or how you can motivate them to read, please feel free to get in touch with the librarian by phoning the school. Our librarians are happy to help.
