'9 to 5'

1/11/2016

Clyde Valley High’s assembly hall jumped back in time to 1970’s America for the school’s production of the hit musical ‘9 to 5’. The highly imaginative production played to packed houses on all three nights.

‘9 to 5 The Musical,’ with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.

Pushed to boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. When the company director shows up the girls are shocked to learn that he is actually on their side and Hart is moved far away where he can no longer cause any more upset and damage.

Max Hatcher played the role of Franklin Hart with assuredness and with a richness of voice that contributed so much to the mood of all the scenes in which he was involved.

Violet Newstead, an aspiring CEO, was brilliantly brought to life by Bethany Murfin, a regular Clyde Valley performer. Bethany captured Violet’s steely determination to perfection as she battled to overcome the sexist barriers in the office. A single mum to Josh, played by Stuart Murphy, Bethany wonderfully portrayed both the nurturing and gritty sides to Violet’s character. Her powerful rendition of ‘One of the Boys,’ was a crowd favourite.

Beth Morley commanded the role of the feisty and extremely glamorous Doralee, a character based on Dolly Parton, herself. Hart viewed Doralee as his office ‘play toy’ and Doralee was only too happy to seek revenge. Constantly judged by her looks, Beth cleverly portrayed the vulnerable side to Doralee’s character also. A moving version of the song ‘Backwoods Barbie,’ showed Doralee’s struggles at different stages of her life and how she has overcome all judgements made on her.

The shy Judy Bernly was superbly played by Katy Ramage. Katy was able to capture Judy’s development from being everyone’s doormat to a strong, independent woman, with the courage to stand up for herself in all situations. The defining moment came when Katy powerfully delivered the song ‘Get out and stay out,’ a message to Judy’s adulterous husband. The audience were completely captured by Katy’s masterful comedic timing and subtleties throughout.

Shelby McElroy, as the ultra-confident, extremely bossy and Hart-loving Roz Keith, was a formidable stage presence as she enjoyed life as Hart’s ever-adoring, committed assistant. The audience whooped and applauded as Shelby hilariously sang of her love for Franklin Hart. She mistreated Violet, Doralee and Judy in her unashamed pursuit of Hart, however Shelby’s portrayal of the character was as such that the audience loved her anyway.

Mr Vincent Lanagan’s brilliant portrayal of the company director, Mr Tinsworthy, had the audience in stitches of laughter. Tinsworthy helped the three main characters in their pursuit of ridding the office of Hart forever. Mr Lanagan’s cameo role was certainly a real crowd pleaser.

A chorus of some 40 other young people supported the lead characters. The choreography devised by Miss Claire Douglas and Mrs Stefanie Chalmers channelled the infectious energy and impressive talent of the entire cast. ‘9 to 5,’ ‘Around Here,’ ‘Shine like the Sun,’ and ‘Change It’ magically showcased the entire cast and were scenes of outstanding creativity.

The stunning sets and costumes helped to recreate the atmosphere of the film, and the lighting and special effects matched any professional production.

The Clyde Valley band simply held the production together and rocked the house down all night long!

Mrs Valerie Livingstone, Director, Mrs Anne Traynor, Musical Director, Miss Claire Douglas, Mrs Stefanie Chalmers and Mrs Debbie Taylor, the show’s production team can proudly regard ‘9 to 5’ as the school’s latest triumph, and of course is the first school show to be held in the new campus.
